Design Preview Specs and Critique 2023.pdf

In the past, I have used 3D-printed business cards to display my expertise in this style of manufacturing. Now, I would like to expand their influence to showcase my design aesthetic principles and talents. These cards will be mounted on a portable DIN-rail system with a bold carrying handle design. The dynamic aspect of the project will be a trigger-like system for releasing and distributing the individual cards.

Design

This business card system will allow me to transport and distribute my business cards in a memorable way. Its visual aesthetic will portray a modern product design aesthetic with a celebration of fasteners. It uses DIN rail, which I have enjoyed working with previously and would like to flex my expertise with.

Materials

This design revolves around 200mm extruded aluminum profiles of IEC standard DIN railing. DIN rail is a standardized metal profile used to construct electrical systems all over the world.

I have constructed a profile that allows 3D printed components to snap to DIN rail.

The cards will be 3D printed, giving them unique properties that will encourage recipients to share them and discourage recipients from discarding them. Using multi-color 3D printing, the logo and text will contrast enough to be read by humans and computers.

The handle will also be 3D printed, probably in a bright accent color to highlight its design.

Video record of my Design Review presentation and critique

“Modern, functional. You've done a very complicated thing the simplest way possible” -Anna Lugthart

“I like the use of standardized rails to hang the cards on.” - Alex Jakubek

“I love the idea of the thickness playing a psychological role for the person receiving the business card. That is definitely something I never considered and was eye opening to hear the implications of the thicker card making you want to hold on to it” -Jon Albaum
